Custom databases can be used to hold any kind of data, whether it be client contacts, telemarketing management, quotations, distribute and control stock, or invoicing and credit control. They can hold very small amounts of information to vast amounts of information.

The key feature of a database is to hold and manage data. Once the data is stored correctly, then all other features and functionality can be added.

Databases can be integrated with other software. This includes email, spreadsheets and word processing.

BYO (Build Your Own) VS Packaged Solutions

It is often difficult to decide whether to have a custom database built or to adapt your business process to a packaged off-the-shelf solution. What features do we need? What support is available? What is the price difference?

Our advice: if a packaged off-the-shelf solution fulfills all your needs, then it will often be better priced, may have better support available, and may have new features applicable to your business. But we find in most cases packaged databases do not meet all requirements. At this point it is important to consider what would be the costs involved in running a parallel system to the packaged solution. Costs such as having out of date information, staff time, and flexibility should be considered. We can provide an analysis service to assist in making these decisions.

Development Cycle

When undertaking the development of a database, it cannot be overstated how important the design phase is. For each custom database we undertake, an appropriate Development Cycle is determined (included in our proposal). This development cycle will outline the project flow of the development.

Development Environments

We are currently offering Custom Database development using Microsoft Access, MSDE, SQL, and Visual Basic. MSDE (licensed with Access 2000) is a new reduced version of MS SQL that allows for more economical server based databases, when an Access 'Jet' engine is not powerful or robust enough to meet your data storage requirements.
