A school drama and dance teacher had found the perfect space to run his classes. It was open and spacious but was an old basket ball court, the acoustics were far from suitable. The reverberation in the mid frequencies peaked at almost 3.5 seconds. Instruction was impossible beyond a few metres. The teacher was quoted almost $30,000 for the installation of a full acoustic ceiling to “solve his problem”. Camets was contacted for assistance in finding an alternative low cost solution. Following testing of the existing room characteristics, the space was modelled and a solution based upon three-dimensional acoustics was found. The final installation which reduced the unoccupied room reverberation to near 1.5 seconds across the entire mid-range, concealed less than 10% of the original ceiling area, and cost less than 1/7th of the conventional solution.
The school drama and dance teacher was delighted with the result. The headmistress was delighted with this expansion in useable teaching space but because only 10% of the original ceiling was covered by the acoustic treatment, a small additional expenditure was required ... “to paint the bit in the middle”.
